Armour OG vs. Under Armour: David vs. Goliath

One of the reasons we love our job and our company is because of the amazing clients we get to work with.  Last year we were approached by a gentleman named Duane Wilborn who had an idea for a line of clothing that would share his faith and fill a need he saw in his community.  A deeply spiritual man, but also a very successful businessman, he had a plan to launch this brand and Reyes Digital Media was more than happy to help!  We designed the first tee shirt to his exact specification and vision. The shirt depicts a full suit of armour as described in Ephesians 6:10-18, as to how to dress oneself to be covered in God’s armour.  The scripture means something to Duane and he wanted his clothing to be an something positive for young people in his community to wear instead of the typical brands worn by youth.

As for any business start up, sales are slow as we build the brand, but a road block was encountered that could threaten the entire business for Duane.  Under Armour.  The sportswear giant has a trademark on Under Armour, and has threatened Duane’s Armour OG with a lengthy legal battle if he does not shut down…the issue they have is with the use of “Armour” in his brand’s name!  The name Armour OG is in reference to the Armour Of God, as described in the verse.  OG is a more uplifting and positive acronym in this case and not a reference to the more well known meaning of Original Gansta.  Under Armour has a history of bullying people and companies who use the word Armour or Armor in any form or fashion and their track record suggests this could be a serious one sided fight as they have mass resources and Duane is just a guy.  I believe, as does others who have joined this fight, such as former Assemblyman Mike Gatto, that a word like armour, that is clearly in the bible, cannot be considered as part of their trademark dispute.  There is no confusion as to the brands, Armour OG looks nothing like any Under Armour apparel.

We believe Under Armour should leave Duane and his small business alone, and we want people who are fans of Under Armour to see what kind of company they can be, with their “Win at any cost” mentality.  They have many professional athletes who represent their brand who are also Christians, and we would like them to be aware of what Under Armour is doing. So we want this story to be national news.  Under Armour is a great brand, and I personally have clothing from them, but I cannot support them if this is how they want to conduct their business under the guise of protecting their brand.  You can help by sharing this story and contacting Under Armour to show your displeasure with how they are trying to oppress Armour OG.

Organic is Great For Veggies; Not So Much For Business On Facebook

If you have a Facebook business page did you know you are only reaching 5% of your fans on average with your organic posts? That means that out of 2000 followers, only about 100 will actually see your post in their feeds! What about the other 1900 followers?  Facebook has been reducing the number of business pages that show up in peoples news feeds. This makes it difficult for the majority of your fans to engage with you, plus getting your page in front of new people is virtually impossible with organic only posts.  So if you are a business owner, leave the organic to the foods you eat, and mix in a little paid advertising to your Facebook campaign. But you already Boost your posts you say?  That is not the answer, and you could be leaving a lot of lettuce on the counter using Boost!

Advertising on Facebook is the answer. If you are a business and you have not yet tried Facebook Advertising,  you are missing out on a great opportunity to drive business to your company!  Facebook Advertising, and advertising on social media in general, is one of the best values for your advertising dollars that exists today!  With a highly targeted ad, you can reach exactly the customers you want to reach, and engage them where they are, and if your ad has a Call To Action, you will be amazed by the results, and every click, view and share is being tracked, so evaluating your advertising efforts is easy!

Back to Boost just for a moment.  If you are “boosting” your posts, that is a good thing, better than just posting and not boosting, however, the Boost option is mostly used by individuals and almost never by actual advertising agencies.  Why?  Because boosting a post does not drive business.  Boosting is great to engage customers, get them to Like your post, Share your post and comment on your post. But if your objectives are more business driven, Facebook Ads is the way to go.  Even for Engagement, Facebook Ads is better than Boosting, but that is a different article!

PromoRepublic Review

It is important for me to be transparent in all I do. I would love to be able to close every deal and be the “go to” resource for all my prospects and handle all their social media and digital marketing needs, but the truth is, not everyone needs my services. They may just need some guidance, or need some tools to help them achieve their goals.  I am constantly looking for time-saving apps and tools that everyday businesses can use to save them time while leading them towards their digital marketing goals.  Of course, maintaining a professional, branded look across all channels is an important factor in the resources I use and recommend.  If I would not use it, I would not recommend it, and I do have a subscription to PromoRepublic to help manage my social media campaigns!  Now, in the interest of transparency, I will also disclose that I liked the platform so much, not only did I subscribe, but I also signed up to be an affiliate, and help spread the word about this useful, easy to use app to help you stay on top of your social media content creation.

What is PromoRepublic?

PromoRepublic is an online, cloud based social media content creator and scheduling service that is well organized and easy to use.  It can be used for up to 5 social media channels on their “Start” subscription level and 15 channels on their “Pro” subscription plan.  It has an easy to use Calendar interface, allowing you to see daily content ideas such as trending topics, special celebration days, important historical milestones, notable birthdays to name a few.  All you do is choose something to post, customize it as needed, and either post right away or schedule it! It also has an easy to use Editor interface allowing you to customize images in the PromoRepublic library, or import your own to customize.  There is even a nice little Stats dashboard for quick comparisons of your posts.

Calendar Feature

The Calendar is a great tool for finding content to post.  As a time-saver, all you hava to do is set aside an hour or two at the end of the month, and just schedule content for the entire next month.  The daily ideas allows you to fill each day with unique content that is engaging and interesting.  As a tool to keep your brand in front of your fans, it is invaluable.  You will still need to sprinkle in content that tells your story, and features your products, but for original content PromoRepublic really comes through!  You may be asking “well what if my content is duplicated by someone else?”  The chances of that happening are very slim, considering each social media channel is a unique audience, and the fact that this tool is geared towards small business and personal use.  Of course should giants like Pepsi and Coke both use this service, the chances of seeing duplicate content would be high, but they don’t need a service like this since they have their own digital media departments! You can rest assured you will be unique to your followers, especially if you choose to use a lot of your own images and content, and just use PromoRepublic to schedule the content.  I was asked what the difference is between a free service like Hootesuite compared to PromoRepublic, since they both allow you to schedule social media campaigns.  All I can say is they are both unique and fill needs for their clients, and I use both!  The main difference is PromoRepublic has a vast library of content, over 6000 post ideas, that you can use and customize,. The Calendar that shows the different post suggestions is also a huge plus in PromoRepublic.

Content Creation and Editing

I am a believer in using rich, beautiful images in your content.  People are drawn to images, so having an interesting, compelling image will naturally get people to click on your content.  With PromoRepublic, you have access to some professionally designed layouts, including background images, layered text and placement for your own logo.  You can also upload your own images into a pre-made template and customize the image yourself, and BOOM!  You are ready to post on your timeline! In my example to the right, you can see an eye-catching image, and the text, which you can edit to say whatever you wish!  Finally, just upload your logo and place it where the little logo icon is and you have branded content ready to post that you created in about a minute!  The easy to use interface offers you all kinds of options from speech bubbles to frames to decorations, all drag and drop!  Once you content is created, you just post or schedule; it is really that easy!

Final Thoughts

If your monthly marketing budget for social media is about $20 a month, PromoRepublic might be a solution for you! It will keep you on track and allow you to organize beautiful, engaging content.
